Delia Derbyshire

Delia Derybshire was the woman who created the most obscure, atmospheric sounds the BBC had ever heard and influenced a mass of dance producers.

Working in at the BBC in 1963, she experimented with sound using tape machines to create effects and and began scoring the music on Doctor Who. It has come about that a hoard of music unheard and untouched from her has been found and will hopefully be available to hear very soon. There is a write up on it on the BBC website with sounds and clips as well, check it here.

Apple Patent New Touch Idea's

Apple have now patented more touch technology which is in use in the iPhone and iTouch. It looks now that the touch technologies will be coming to the iMac and Mac Book Pro, meaning a host of new and manipulated software program's. One patent is a touch screen virtual DJ, playing files from your computer as shown above. I'd still rather use a physical object and if using MP3/WAV, use Serrato as you are still using a deck, , but this new system which has been used a few times on a massive desktop screen by the likes of Kerri Chandler recently, is still a massive breakthrough that a company such as Apple is looking into it. Only time will tell if it will be part of iLife or a standalone programme. The other touch ideas are that of the dock, photo applications and video application. More reading here.

Korg nanoSeries

Last few months I've been trying to start getting into music production and bought myself some gear. I bought an M-Audio Oxygen 8 v2, fantastic small midi keyboard but no drum pads. I've been looking for a while for a small pad extension for my Mac Book Pro, as I am limited on space and money and think I have found the answer. Korg are due to release the nano series of a midi keyboard, drum pads and a controller, all round £60 each. I will only be needing the pads but for £60 they look fantastic, especially with the XY pad it has. Due to come out in August/September these slimline USB Midi controllers could be the answer so many people have been waiting for.

RA 109 The Mole

Usually I listen to the Resident Advisor Podcast's straight away but been busy of late missed out on listening to the Mole until yesterday. Just before the mix, his girlfriend dumped him and then he broke his collarbone so he delivers us a soul mix from the heart. One of the best soul and uplifting mixes I've heard for a while and a keeper for sure.

Toby Tobias - Space Shuffle

Toby Tobias releases his long player, Space Shuffle on CD at Juno now with the full release coming 20th July. Including the single, The Feeling, it shuffles along through disco edits and deep spaced out beats. With Prins Thomas releasing his first full length album next month, even though its only 3 tracks long, looks like another good summer for deep disco space shuffle shizzle.
